Meeting Human Needs

Food: 50,000 people in Cook County face increased hunger due to misguided "welfare reform" and lack of state readiness to handle the crisis. Most City Colleges students need help with food or rent, while class hours are reduced.

Medicaid: Tens of thousands of eligible people lose benefits, or are waiting for services, due to closed offices, understaffing, computer glitches and other problems.

Mental Health: Public mental health clinics are a vital safety net.

Housing: Rent is out of control; accessible housing out of reach.

Fair Taxes/budgets: Poor people in Illinois pay double the tax rate paid by the rich.
